traffic in downtown cairo...

....is downright crazy. there seems to be only 1 rule in cairo: avoid accidents. otherwise, anything is fair game. there are traffic lights, but they hardly matter. there are cops everywhere, and at major accidents they sometimes attempt to direct traffic. egyptian drivers weave in and out of lanes, alternately speeding up and slowing down. at intersections and at traffic circles (of which there are alot), they come from all different angles and crowd into tiny spaces. inevitably, some drivers take lefts from the further right lane, and vice versa. but it's always exciting. it's how we might drive in the US if there were no rules. here are some pictures i took from a cab on my way home last night. i'll try to get better pictures of the traffic and post them later.
